Sunderland AFC is proud to reveal the Club’s 2025-26 third kit, paying tribute to our iconic nickname – The Black Cats.

The striking new design will be available to purchase from 8am on Friday 15 August both online and in-store, with a special launch event taking place at the Stadium of Light store that morning.

The shirt features a bold black patterned base, crafted from a mandala of 11 black cats – symbolising the 11 players on the pitch – accented with gun metal grey detailing influenced by the origin of our nickname. A proud black cat emblem sits on the chest, while the rear neck carries a pair of amber cat eyes, evoking memories of past promotion battles and symbolising determination and focus for the future.

Woven into the fabric, the shirt also tells the story of our famous nickname:

In 1805, a man was on lookout for Napoleonic enemy ships at a gun battery in Roker.

One night, he thought he heard a baby crying. Searching for it, he discovered a black cat wailing so piercingly he mistook it for the devil. Ridiculed for this, the gun battery became known as the Black Cat Battery.

When the football club moved to the area, the nickname naturally fell into place.

Local DJ L.P. Rhythm features as a central figure within the launch. Born and raised in Sunderland, the DJ is fresh from securing a spot as Radio 1’s hottest record and now represents the city and the club on the global stage. L.P. returns to Sunderland for a homecoming show later this year.  

The 2025-26 third kit is available in adult, junior, and mini sizes, alongside a goalkeeper shirt inspired by the patterned tiles at The Bridge Hotel. Premier League and Say No To Racism sleeve badges are available, with W88 as the front-of-shirt sponsor for adult sizes and Utilita for junior kits, as well as unsponsored shirts.

Produced with hummel’s ECO8 technology, each adult shirt is made using eight recycled plastic bottles. An accompanying range is also available to purchase from tomorrow and includes an anthem jacket, pre-match t-shirt, quarter-zip jacket, Black Cats tee and hoodie.
