Clarets boss reviews Saturday’s loss to the Eagles

Manager Vincent Kompany praised his side’s efforts against Crystal Palace and believes his side will reap the rewards with performances like Saturday’s despite falling short but says mistakes from his team ‘have to be less and minimal’.

The Clarets were the stronger side across the 90 minutes, enjoying plenty of possession, creating several chances and firing 17 shots towards goal, but just couldn’t squeeze the ball past Sam Johnstone in the Palace goal in a tight contest.

Speaking post-match at Turf Moor, Kompany applauded his team’s overall showing against Roy Hodgson’s side but admits the result ‘was decided on a mistake and not being able to break through’.

The Burnley boss said: “First of all, I want to be respectful of the opponent and sometimes you win these type of games and sometimes you don’t.

“The facts are we lost but played well. We created chances and looked like a team that has something to offer in this league.

“If we play more often like this, we will get rewards. It was decided on a mistake and then the second goal, if you put into context, we put people forward and tried to get a late goal.

“We got punished trying to get that late goal, it can go either way but overall, the game was decided on mistake and not able to break our way through.”

Kompany added: “Mistakes have to be less and minimal, despite the good performance and lots of chances we created.

“I trust in the players we have to finish the chances we had and we just didn’t quite have that today.”

Despite the Clarets suffering a 6th successive defeat at home, Kompany insists his side ‘can’t get too knocked down’ and must keep the same confidence and belief.

“We have to put everything into context and not get too knocked down and take too much from it.

“We worked really hard today and in other games, today we had the performance just not the reward from it.

“You want to call out the facts, which is a mistake cost us but we also don’t want the players to lose confidence.

“We know we have to improve fast and to get there we are going to face moments like these and turn them into our advantage.”
